Leaving your vehicle unused for extended periods of time can lead to a number of unexpected issues and in these challenging times are more likely to happen.
There are some simple maintenance tasks that can be carried out at home.
Ensure your car does not over heat when back on the road due to a leak in the radiator.
With cars being used a lot less at the moment, a flat battery can be a real concern. We would always recommend using a battery conditioner to recharge. If that's not possible here's how to keep it ticking over (petrol & diesel models only). Please stay at home to charge your battery.
Keeping the engine oil topped up in your car is a basic, but essential task to ensure that your engine is in top condition between services. To do it at home you will need about a litre of oil (the difference between F & L). You can find the right grade in your vehicle handbook.
The recommended pressure can be found on the tyre’s sidewall and on the inside of the drivers door. Pressure and condition will reduce naturally if the vehicle is not being used.
The law requires vehicle tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre. A quick and easy way to see if your tyre tread exceed the minimum legal tread depth is to take the 20p test. Simply place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit.
Keep your windscreen sparkling clean for those essential trips. It's really important to dilute your windscreen fluid to match the weather conditions outside, fill up to the maximum and don't forget to firmly put the cap back on once you're done. . Use of water on its own can become “smelly” over time.
These hotspots are the most touched parts within your vehicle and should be cleaned upon every completed journey, using a clean cloth and antibacterial spray. Please stay at home if you can.
If you notice bacterial growth and unpleasant smells inside the vehicle, consider Air Con refresh and replacement pollen filter.
Bird droppings can stain and disclour the cars paintwork. Clean off to keep your cars shine.
Clean out old cups that may start to get smell and attract mould.
